Farewell Soo, loyal companion and dear friend.

THERE was great sadness in my home last week. Soolam, my senior service dog, was put down. He was 13. The decision to euthanise Soo, as my other dogs and I fondly knew him, was not at all easy.

The move was quickly reached when the Golden Retriever could no longer stand or walk. He could not even eat his meals without throwing up.

However, everything about Soo’s final journey on earth turned out to be as intriguing and uncanny as the day when he first arrived.

He was barely two months old then. The pup was a gift from a couple who were doctors. The purpose was to see if a retriever could make a good service dog.

Friend for life: The writer spending precious moments with Soo before he was euthanised.

He needed to be fed as many as four times a day. I had to clean up after a dog that seemed to have an endless supply of poo.

The most difficult part, however, was to grab the pup and put him back in his crate. Fortunately, his senior canine partners literally lent their paws to solve the problem.

Soo had a knack of chasing the big dogs around the house. One of them would cleverly use the situation to dash back to me so that I could grab Soo.

The experience of raising and training Soo helped to psyche me up. And as for Soo, he went on to become a service dog that was parallel to none.

He was the perfect companion to attend meetings with. He’d been to church numerous times and even stayed completely unnoticed at government meetings. Some of the chairpersons discovered his presence only after the event.

He has helped me in unusual places, too. These include in the toilet at the United Nations building in Kuala Lumpur (when my shoe was out of reach and the soap fell on the floor).

He also sat through a serious discussion with people with AIDS at the Malaysian AIDS Council.

On top of all these, Soo had appeared scores of times in the media which included newspapers, TV and radio. He was the main star of a special video which featured my service dogs.

Once when I was caught in a 30-minute thunderstorm in a forest, Soo chose to get drenched with me in the heavy downpour rather than seek shelter elsewhere.

In his more than a decade of service, Soo relished his car rides the most – so much so that I became his private chauffeur. We must have travelled thousands of kilometres over the decade and only once, in all those years, did he throw up in the back seat.

Once our adventure led us all the way to Penang on a gruelling 24-hour trip where Soo performed and wowed several hundred people at a dog event with his service dog skills.

On that fateful Sunday morning, an extremely feeble Soo looked straight into my eyes. It was as if he was telling me to be strong for him and do the right thing to painlessly end his suffering.

He never once whimpered or flinched. He took every opportunity to lay his head on my shoulder or hands whenever I was by his side.

Despite the pain, Soo remained resolute and dignified in the back seat of my car during his final journey to the veterinarian. He was on my lap with his head held high as I wheeled into the clinic.

I made sure that my hero fell asleep before he entered into eternal sleep. The clinic didn’t charge me anything for putting a great dog down.

Another doctor, who is an expert in dog show winning breeds, offered to bury Soo in his yard at home.

My king, I’m proud to say, is now privileged to be the only retriever laid to rest with other national and international champion Doberman and German Shepherd Dog breeds that have crossed over the rainbow bridge before him.

Even more amazing is the fact that Soo is buried in the home of the mother of my latest and youngest service dog candidate, Dobe Ace Zhar the Doberman.

Last Saturday, Zhar and I were at an international dog show in KL with more than 200 dogs from all over Asia. And although I was the only person in a wheelchair there, Zhar stuck close to me much like Soo used to do during happier days.

And by a very strange coincidence, Zhar kept climbing up on my lap several times as if to say: “Don’t worry, you’re safe now. I’m with you.”

Angels don’t always come with wings; sometimes they have tails, even if it happens to be a rather short one.

Dog with the longest ears

BOULDER, Colorado (AP) - Harbor has over two feet (60 centimeters) of ears.

On Tuesday, the black-and-tan coonhound from Boulder, Colorado, gets the 2012 Guinness World Records title for "longest ears on a living dog."

His left ear is 12.25 inches (31.12 centimeters) long and his right is 13.5 inches (34.29 centimeters) long.

Owner Jennifer Wert says when her 8-year-old was a puppy, he would trip on his ears and roll down stairs.

These days, Wert says people often stop them to ask questions, take photos or tug on his ears.

Tigger, a bloodhound from Illinois who died in 2009, still holds the record for longest ears ever. One was 13.5 inches (34.29 centimeters) long, the other 13.75 inches (34.92 centimeters) long.

Coonhounds use their ears to help with scent.

50 dogs put their best paw forward as they vie for top honours at speciality show

GERMAN Shepherd lovers gathered at the SJK (C) Peng Bin in Bukit Tengah, Bukit Mertajam, Penang, for the speciality show organised by the German Shepherd Dog Club of Malaysia.

The show, held for the second time by the club, attracted about 50 German Shepherds from various parts of the country.

The dogs were evaluated under various classes — puppy (six to 12 months), junior (12 to 18 months), youth (18 to 24 months), adult (24 months and above) and Malaysian bred (above six months whelped locally).

They were divided into male and female categories.

The show was judged by Louis Donald, specially flown in from Australia, who has been involved in German Shepherd dog shows for 48 years.

Donald has been a judge for such shows in England, South Africa, India, Italy, Singapore, the Philippines, New Zealand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and Hong Kong.

Sinus Vom Eichemplatz, at 25 months, was judged the best male German Shepherd.

Its owner Chong Lee Leong, 38, a businessman from Bukit Mertajam, said he was very happy that his canine had again come in first. It had previously won twice in other shows.

In the female category, 20-month-old Famy was declared champion.

Its owner Chee Ang Seang, 54, a businessman from Tanjung Bungah, said Famy had also won twice previously in other shows.

“I was confident she would make it based on her performance,” he added.

Club president Lawrance Lee said there was an increased interest in German Shepherds in the country.

“This can be seen in the quality of dogs in our Malaysian show rings today, and the feedback and participation on our online web pages,” he said.

Donald said the show was very well organised and luckily the rain stopped after an hour of heavy downpour during the recent event.

“Overall, I was very pleased with the quality of the dogs and the number which took part in the show. The breed is going on well here in Malaysia.

“I was in Malaysia 30 years ago and saw tremendous increase of the breed here then,” he added.

He said it was his second time here on the club’s invitation as judge.

Cat lovers won’t feel left out at the Petz Pow Wow. Malaysia Cat Club or Kelab Kuching Malaysia will also be participating.

Kelab Kucing Malaysia (KKM), founded in 1979, is a non-profit organisation that aims to protect the uniqueness of the cat breeds and create a loving and caring environment for all cats.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have reached a dead end in their investigations into the man who was caught on tape using brute force on a poodle

Federal CID director Comm Datuk Seri Bakri Zinin said they were not able to identify the man in the video.

He added that unless police received new leads or tip-off from the public, they might not be able to identify the man.

The Bukit Aman CID was tasked to investigate the case.

A video of the man abusing the dog raised the ire of canine lovers who began a nationwide hunt to identify him.

PETALING JAYA: A video of a man abusing a dog has sparked a heated response from canine lovers on social networking site Facebook and triggered a nationwide hunt for him.

In the widely-circulated video, the unidentified man, believed to be a Malaysian, is seen using brutal force on a poodle in his attempt to get the dog to stand up on its hind legs.

Some of those who viewed the video have said the man is a Malaysian.

Several people also claimed to know his close friends.

Harsh lessons: The poodle being abused by the unidentified man in the video.

In one scene, when the dog returned to standing on its four legs, the man in frustration gave it a violent smack, sending the poodle flying.

The Facebook user who uploaded the 15-minute video last Friday said she had discovered it in a thumbdrive which she had found in a Kuala Lumpur shopping mall.

Thousands of animal lovers, shocked and angered by the man’s act, immediately called for his arrest.

“This is an outrage! Swift action ought to be taken on this man,” one Facebook user commented.

“The guy in the video is crazy to have done such a thing to the helpless animal,” another said. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is getting complaints and leads from callers.

“We have been receiving a lot of calls on the matter but we have no confirmation on the man’s identity,” SPCA office manager M. Shelvy said.

She also asked those with information to call the SPCA at 03-42565312 or 03-42535179.

KUANTAN: The Kuantan Animal Rescue & Education (KARE) group will be organising the 4th Doggie Open Day on Nov 14 in Taman Gelora with more exciting activities awaiting pet owners.

Organising chairperson Joyce Mah said the annual charity event from 8am onwards, would provide an opportunity particularly for dog lovers in Kuantan to bring their pets out for a fun-filled day.

Mah said there would be a dogathon, doggie games, a children colouring contest and stalls selling recycled items, food, drinks, pet products, cakes, souvenirs and others.

“Entry fee for the dogathon is RM35 and the participants will be given a KARE T-shirt and some goodies for their pets.

Furry friends: Dog owners will get a chance to let their pet dogs socialise with one another during the upcoming event.

“Each doggie games and children colouring contest are also priced at RM10 each,” she said, adding that proceeds from the event would be used for the spaying and neutering programme of stray dogs and cats.

Mah said the aims of the event were to reduce the rising population of strays and abandoned dogs and cats in Kuantan and to create awareness of dog ownership responsibilities.

“As pet owners, we must take care of our dogs and cats but we must also ensure that their offsprings are well taken care of.

“If we are not prepared to look after them, spaying and neutering is the best solution,” she said, adding that KARE would continue to organise programmes from time to time to raise funds for the welfare of strays.

Mah said public and corporate citizen’s support is essential for the event to be successful.

She said KARE was a voluntary organisation formed under the Association of Sustainable Kuantan to educate the younger generations on proper caring of animals.

LOS ANGELES: A German shepherd hoisted to safety from the storm-swollen Los Angeles river Friday is fine, authorities said, but the firefighter who splashed down in the daring helicopter rescue was hospitalised after being bitten by the dog.

Los Angeles fire officials said 50-year-old Joe St. Georges, who suffered severe hand and arm injuries, was taken to County USC Medical Center.

“He has significant injuries, bites and punctures, to his hand and arm and is being seen by a specialist,” Los Angeles fire Capt Steve Ruda said. The 25-year department veteran was in good condition, Ruda said.

The dog, nicknamed Vernon after the Southern California town where he was found, did not have a name tag or computer chip, said Sgt. Charles Miller of the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority in Downey.

It was quarantined to be monitored for rabies, but “appears to be well-maintained and cared for,” Miller said.

At least 50 firefighters responded to reports that the dog was in the river. For an hour, firefighters stood at the top of the steep, concrete banks, throwing life vest and float rings, hoping the dog would grab on.

Most of the time, the canine walked along a pipe or ledge in the centre of the river, sometimes slipping. One firefighter got into the river and tried to catch him, but the dog took off. Soon the pipe was submerged.

When the helicopter hovered overhead, the dog scrambled to the side of the river and tried to climb the slippery sides, only to slip each time.

St. Georges finally splashed down from the helicopter, wrestled with the frightened canine and lifted it to safety, using the dog’s collar and a rope to hoist him up. Despite St. Georges’ injuries, he didn’t fail the dog.

At a late afternoon news conference, helicopter pilot Scott Bowman said St. Georges took a muzzle with him but he wasn’t able to get it on, “so he decided to go for the capture.”

Miller said the dog had some scrapes and worn nails, but was otherwise fine. “He was fearful when he first got here, understandably. He went through a big ordeal,” Miller said.

The dog will be quarantined for 10 days, unless the owner shows up with proof of rabies vaccination, Miller said. Then, the dog could be monitored at home. If the owner doesn’t show up, officials will try to find the dog a new home.

MORE people are giving up their pets due to the ecomonic downturn, said Selangor’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) manager Jacinta Johnson-Chan.

Johnson said based on figures for the past two years, the surrender rate of household pets had increased compared with the numbers adopted.

“The total number of animals surrendered in 2009 was 8,499 compared with 5,000 in 2008. However, only 1,790 were adopted,” she said, adding that the rest had to be put to sleep.

“Apart from the slowdown in the economy, more and more pet owners are also opting to move into condominiums and apartments, and there are the irresponsible ones who don’t see their pet as a member of the family but just an animal,’’ she said.

According to Johnson, there is also a new trend developing whereby pet shops are allowing animals to be bought on instalment.

“It’s not illegal but unhealthy. People can now afford pedigrees but what they are not ready for is that pure breed dogs need high maintenance and need a lot of care.

“When they fall sick, people just discard them like rubbish because they can’t afford the time and money to keep them,’’ Johnson said, adding that the animal shelter receives a large number of pedigrees, too.

To encourage people to adopt, the SPCA and advertising agency Y&R and sponsors Purina and 1 Utama Shopping Centre embarked on an adoption campaign called “Take A Leash, Give A Life” via a big billboard to encourage people to adopt at the shopping centre during the weekend.

The first-of-its-kind campaign by SPCA Selangor aims to create awareness on the importance of adoption from the animal shelter, as they struggle to find a home for more than 700 animals surrendered at their doorstep each month.

“It is an idea to get people to adopt pets from the shelter homes instead of buying them at pet shops. What happens is people who visit the booth are encouraged to take home a leash which is given free and it is okay if they want to adopt a dog at the end of the day -- we just want them to start thinking about it,’’ said Y&R regional head Edward Ong.

The adoption campaign was held from 10am to 7pm at LG Floor, Rainforest area, 1 Utama. Apart from the free limited edition leashes, visitors also bought merchandise, signed the “Animals Matter To Me” petition, and took part in some interesting animal-welfare themed games to raise funds for the animals.

Peiople who are considering adopting a pet should also drop by the SPCA Selangor. The next adoption drive would be held in Bangsar Shopping Centre.

One of the few pet shops that provide boarding service, Sugar Rae Pet Village in Tanjung Bungah, has been fully occupied for most of the holiday season.

Its owner, who wished to be known only as Aunty Kim, said most of her customers were regulars.

“I have kennels of different sizes and the pets are kept here for a few days to a few months.

“The holiday season is always busier as pet owners go on long holidays.

“We are even fully booked for Chinese New Year. We’ll be closed for a week during the time, but owners can pick up their pets,” she said.

Aunty Kim lets out the dogs separately three times a day to run around the compound or swim in the mini pool.

She said some owners did not mind bringing their own cage when all kennels were taken.

Another pet shop owner, Celyn Chuah of Wonderland II in Tanjung Tokong, said her boarding service was mostly booked for the holiday season, too.

“Other than dogs, we take in cats. We have nine kennels and 30 stainless steel cages,” she said.

Chuah said her customers have also started to make bookings for Chinese New Year.

In this guide I'm going to teach you how to stop your dog from barking. There are several reasons why your dog could be barking. The first step you'll need to take is to distinguish the reason for his barking. A dog will bark when he is nervous, excited, bored, territorial, frightened, or if he is of a specific breed. Depending on what the reason is, you should remove temptation or start training him to fix the behavior.

Giving your dog consistent exercise, and training him often are very crucial. Consistent exercise will help use up your dog's energy, which will make training him a much easier. Training will help your dog understand impulse control, which in turn will keep you in control.

For specific situations, such as when they are excited or anxious, you can teach them alternative behaviors. Alternate behaviors would include making him sit, lay down, or go to his bed. Any time they are in a situation where they would bark, have treats on hand and make them do an alternate behavior. This will keep them distracted from what they would be barking at and will replace the barking with a more pleasing behavior. It is important to give positive feedback, especially when they give up what they want to do and listen to you. The barking will eventually be replaced with the alternate behavior you have been teaching him. Teaching your dog an alternate behavior takes time and a lot of persistence, but it's certainly worth the effort in the end.

When dealing with territorial barking it's more challenging, but not impossible to fix. In this case you are going against his natural behavior. A dog’s territory is sacred to them – it's their space and it's their job to protect it! If your dog sees an animal or a person that he doesn't recognize close to his yard, he will automatically see them as an impostor and will bark at them as a way of informing them that this is his territory, and to stay way. In this circumstance, the best way to quiet them is to give them a signal of some sort that tells them that “it's all clear”. You can select any command you desire. By issuing this command you will essentially be telling him that the “intruder” is not an intruder after all, and he can settle down. Before giving the “all clear” command, you want to validate that they saw something that doesn’t look right to them. You can go outside, to the window, front door, or wherever they sensed a disturbance. After you are done checking it out, praise him for doing a great job.Then with absolute confidence in voice and body language, give the “all clear” command and walk away, taking them with you. It's vital that you don't try to physically make him leave – walking away is all you should do. Make sure that you do not look at them if they don't follow you, just continue walking away and call them. This will show them that it really is okay!

For fear barkers you can typically use the same “all clear” command you utilize for territorial barkers. It is crucial that you don't console them by hugging them, petting them, talking to them in a high pitched voice, etc. They want a leader that is in charge when they are scared. He is looking to you for safety. In a soothing but firm voice, give the “all clear” command, while keeping your body language confident.

For some dog breeds barking is in their nature. Terriers and hounds are a wonderful example of dogs that are notorious for being barkers. Again, you are going against nature here! For this kind of dog I recommend having a “quiet” command. To teach them this, it's best to be in a controlled setting, away from too many distractions. Wait until your dog barks and then tell him to be “quiet”. If they stop barking, tell them how good of a dog they are and give them a treat. At times, they will be too caught up in what they are barking at and they won't hear you. If this happens don't repeat yourself or raise your voice. They will just assume you’re joining in. Fill a container full of beans or coins as a substitute. You can then squirt them or shake your noise maker to get their attention. Once they stop and look at you, tell them to be silent.

A good amount of exercise can help when your dog is barking out of boredom.

Dogged by islanders’ cruel action

It’s a doggone pity that what may have been a more humane alternative to stray dog culling backfired when the canines starved to death on two islands, creating waves of anger all over the world.

IT happened about 10 years ago but the dog-shooting event left a scarring memory on teenager Vivien. Only five or six years old then, she witnessed the shooting of stray dogs on her island of Pulau Ketam by a team from the Klang Municipal Council (MPK).

“They shot all the stray dogs on the island, including a young dog that I liked and had been feeding,” she recalls.

In safe hands: So far, animal activists have managed to rescue seven dogs from the uninhabited island of Pulau Tengah.

The experience not only frightened Vivien, as she wants to be known, but also the rest of the islanders who were mostly small scale fishermen and traders then. Pulau Ketam headman Cha Keng Lee too recalls the incident and says that the MPK dog-catching unit visits the island once in two years.

“They do not shoot dogs anymore but we still do not like how they exterminate the dogs. They hang them to death before loading the carcasses into boats to be taken to the mainland,” claims Cha.

As the village headman, he is concerned that such an inhumane action would put off tourists to the island, which is one of Selangor’s tourist attractions.

“That is why we decided to trap the strays on the island and transport them to the nearby islands of Pulau Tengah and Pulau Selat Kering so that they would not have to be killed,” says Cha.

However, he adds, he was not aware that the islands would not have food or water to sustain the canines.

Clarence Chua, spokesman for canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better, scoffs at Cha’s claims, saying it is difficult to believe that Pulau Ketam residents didn’t know about the islands’ physical condition.

“It is ridiculous for someone from the Pulau Ketam fishing and trading community to make such a claim,” says Chua.

Ironically, what the villagers believed was a better solution than MPK’s has blown up in their faces and Pulau Ketam is now regarded with disdain by not only the locals but also the international community.

Media reports about 400 strays trapped and dumped on the uninhabited islands surrounding Pulau Ketam have resulted in an international outcry.

Many of the unfortunate dogs died and those surviving have resorted to eating the carcasses of the ones that had died.

Animal activists have been racing to both islands to rescue the dogs but geographical obstacles such as the mangrove swamp surrounding the location have made the rescue operations difficult.

So far, Furry Friends Farm has managed to rescue five dogs while the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has rescued two.

The catastrophe which has been extensively covered by the local media had also found its way into ABC News, CNBC, Fox News and newspapers in the United States, Britain and the Philippines.

Local animal welfare activists are also up in arms not only against the folk of Pulau Ketam but also the local authorities.

This is not the first time that the local authorities have come under fire from animal welfare groups for their alleged inhumane methods of handling stray dogs.

In February this year, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) garnered negative publicity when allegations surfaced that its staff were breaking the necks of dogs in their pound before dumping the carcasses in an open grave. Animal activists gathered outside the DBKL pound and held a peaceful vigil in protest. DBKL was also taken to task by animal welfare groups for allegedly feeding stray dogs poisoned chicken meat to cull them.

DBKL denied both allegations even though there was a video footage of the first incident and witnesses’ account for the second.

Bounty hunters

The Selangor Government has also been criticised for allowing local councils to spend hundreds of thousands of ringgit to hire two canine bounty hunting companies to round up stray dogs.

The companies were paid about RM30 per dog caught and it was common to see many of the dogs in the pound wearing collars, indicating that they belonged to someone.

Some of the local councils, such as MPK which does not have pounds to hold caught strays, have also been lambasted for keeping the dogs in lorries for days before they are euthanised.

Independent Pet Rescuers founder Sherrina Krishnan says the money should instead be used to create a humane method of dealing with the stray dog population.

“Why not give the independent animal welfare groups land to collectively build a sanctuary for these dogs and the money could be used to neuter all the rescued dogs as well as to manage the place?” says Sherrina.

James Hogan, vice-chairman of the London-based Mayhew Animal Home and Humane Education Centre, says in an e-mail interview that he was shocked and disturbed by what had transpired in Pulau Ketam.

Sadly, it is one more example of what happens when there is inadequate regulatory framework to govern the way people relate to the animals. He adds that the review of existing animal protection legislation currently being carried by the Malaysian Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) must be accompanied by pro-active enforcement measures.

He says it would be interesting to make statistical comparisons between the way enforcement is effected in England and in Malaysia.

In 2007, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), investigated 137,245 complaints of cruelty, issued thousands of verbal warnings, spent £6mil on prosecutions and secured 2,026 convictions in court hearings for cruelty, he shares.

Hogan adds that convictions resulted in jail sentences, bans from keeping animals, community service orders, conditional discharges and fines ranging from hundreds to thousands of pounds.

“It would be interesting to compare these statistics with the number of court hearings, convictions, bans, fines, etc, that were effected by the DVS during the same period in Malaysia,” he says.

In Malaysia, people are hardly brought to court over animal cruelty cases and those prosecuted are let off with merely a slap on the wrist.

Seeking a lasting solution

Hogan says his organisation regularly plays host to delegations from overseas city governments who want to find a lasting solution to the issue of animal over-population in their city.

“For the record, I have personally made several approaches to the Malaysian High Commission in London, inviting them to send someone to visit us so we could at least have some exploratory discussions about this issue but they have shown no interest in engaging with us,” says Hogan.

Meanwhile, Selangor exco member in charge of local councils Ronnie Liu has called for all independent rescuers and rescue groups to come forward and work with the state government on matters pertaining to animal welfare.

“Please take the initiative to come forward so that all of us can work together with the local councils to bring positive changes to the methods currently in use to counter the problems of strays in the state,” he says.

Liu adds that he is open to suggestions and wants more groups to participate in the rescue of the abandoned dogs.

World's first cloned pet dog turns 1

With one ear flopped forward and her tongue dangling in anticipation of another item to fetch, Mira seemed like any other playful pup scampering around Eastwood Park in Tamalpais Valley.

But proud owner Lou Hawthorne of Mill Valley said Mira - the world's first cloned pet dog - signals a new horizon in genetics. The border collie/husky just turned 1 year old.

"I'm delighted we're here at this milestone," said Hawthorne, who spent a decade trying to clone his family's dog that died in 2002. "During the process of creating her, it was a goal. But once I had Mira in my arms she was an entity with feelings. She's real."

Hawthorne, 48, said Mira's home life provided "the first time we can say anything halfway intelligent about behavioral similarities" among clones. His dog was born in the same Korean biotech lab that created the first cloned dog in 2005.

In addition to a striking physical resemblance to Missy, a three-quarters border collie and one-quarter husky that died at age 15,

her clone shows the same athleticism, intelligence and mischievousness, but some differences as well.

Like Missy, Mira likes to play a game in which someone holds an item just out of reach; unlike Missy, Mira doesn't mind loud noises and bright lights.

Hawthorne, chief executive of Mill Valley-based BioArts International, which licensed patents issued in the 1990s after researchers in Scotland cloned a sheep, created three other Missy clones months after Mira. Missy Too lives with other family members; Mani lives with a scientist in Phoenix; and Kahless lives with a linguist in Boulder, Colo., where she is being taught commands in the Klingon language from "Star Trek." (In the "Star Trek" franchise, Kahless was a legendary Klingon leader who was cloned in an episode of "The Next Generation" series.)

"We have four near-Missys," he quipped.

Their genetic makeup was confirmed to be Missy's exact copy by the University of California at Davis veterinary genetics lab.

Elizabeth Wictum, associate director of the school's veterinary forensics lab, said though the puppies were deemed genetically identical, "in terms of how identical the dogs would be, we don't entirely know how much genetics play in terms of personality."

"Their environment plays a role in developing the animal's personality," she said.

BioArts, which raised more than $700,000 in an online dog-cloning auction earlier this year, is Hawthorne's second commercial cloning venture. His Genetic Savings and Clone of Sausalito, which offered to clone customers' pet cats, closed in 2006.

In the past month, the firm cloned three dogs. Hawthorne declined to identify the customers, but he said they included clients from the company's auction - and possibly Trakr, the German shepherd search-and-rescue dog that found the last human survivor of 9/11 among the World Trade Center rubble. Trakr's owner has accepted BioArts' offer to clone the dog.

Hawthorne would only say of the auction clients that they were all couples or families wishing to clone their pets; four of them live in the United States, and cloning fees ranged from $130,000 to $170,000.

"Pet cloning is fun, but I think it's not going to be a huge business because the work is very complex," he said. "Most of the world is going to get dogs out of shelters, and that's a good thing."

Emaciated dog with inherited skin condition found wandering in Klang,Malaysia.

INDEPENDENT animal rescuers are crying foul and want the relevant authorities to monitor dog breeders in the country after an emaciated, weak and disoriented Doberman was found wandering in Teluk Pulai, Klang, recently.

The dog, which is literally a walking skeleton, is also hairless due to a genetically inherited skin disorder.

The dog, which was wearing a good quality choke chain around its neck, is believed to have been abandoned by its owners who might not have known how to manage its skin condition.

Pitiful sight: The Doberman is believed to have been abandoned by its owners.

Independent rescuer Leigh Chen said the Doberman’s inherited condition might be due to too much in-breeding.

“Many pedigree puppies come from backyard breeders and unlicensed puppy mills.

“These unscrupulous breeders have no qualms about mating siblings with each other or even offspring with their parents,” alleged Chen.

Chen said the Veterinary Services Department (DVS), as the custodian of animal welfare, must be given the power and legal right to crack down on errant breeders.

“In addition to this, it must also be made compulsory for pet shop owners to microchip the pets they sell, for identification,” she added.

Fellow rescuer Sherrina Krishnan concurred and advised the public to be cautious when buying pets.

“My only advice to people who buy pedigrees is, please don’t just buy one for the sake of buying one. Check the breeding conditions, check the breeders – ask for papers,” she said.

Meanwhile, a passer-by rescued the Doberman and handed it over to non-governmental organisation Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII), which recently launched its canine welfare project dubbed “Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better”.

The dog has since been sent to a veterinary clinic where it was diagnosed to be suffering from severe heartworm infestation, low platelet count and malnutrition.

The attending veterinarian also said the dog was only about two years old.

According to CDII director Clarence C.R. Chua, his organisation’s canine welfare project emphasised a no-kill policy and therefore the dog would be treated and taken care of until its last day.

“It’s only two years old and therefore deserves a second chance to continue living,” said Chua.

He said CDII’s canine welfare project was a long-term plan aimed at opening a sanctuary and hospice for dogs in Selangor.

“We have a long way to go and need to raise funds to realise our plan.

“We also hope that the Selangor government will give us a helping hand by allocating us a piece of land for our sanctuary and hospice,” he added.

Man’s best friend comes in various sizes, shapes and shades, and some are smarter than others. Find out where your dog places.

Like how all parents behave when it comes to their children, dog owners are convinced that theirs must the most intelligent, best-looking and adorable in the world.

Your dog does not need to be a champion or the offspring of one. Nor does it need any papers or documentation. And it certainly does not need to possess a pedigree stretching back 2,000 years to make it the apple of your eye.

But is your pet pooch really as smart as you think?

Here is a list of the smartest and dumbest dogs in the world drawn up from a survey of lists on the Internet. The brightest breeds are rated based on two criteria: “obeying first command”, which has to be performed immediately at least 95% of the time, and “understanding new commands”, which has to be done successfully in less than five repetitions.

While some mixed-mongrels can be remarkably clever, this list only looks at certified breeds.

World’s smartest dogs

1. Border Collie: If a dog can actually look intelligent, this is it! Its keen, sharp, alert expression says it all. The Border Collie came from the borders between England and Scotland, where shepherds bred this dog over centuries.

Its unique features are its incredible ability to work out of sight of its master, to reason on its own, and its unique style of gathering the sheep with sweeping wide runs and weird ability to control them with an intense gaze called the “eye” while using stalking movements.

Its agility, strength, good looks, nice temperament and brain power make it the world’s top dog.

2. Poodle: The uninformed may shriek and protest because poodles have been portrayed as the dumb blondes of the doggie world. But did you know that poodles were originally hunting dogs bred by the pragmatic German, and not the fashion-conscious French?

Smart, alert and receptive to obedience training, poodles are often seen in circus doing tricks. The infamous “Poodle Clip” hairdo was designed by hunters, not make-up stylists, to enable poodles to move through water more quickly as they were bred as water retrievers! The patches of fur were meant to protect the vital organs susceptible to cold.

3. German Shepherd: German Shepherds are the world’s most dependable working dog and ideally suited for war zones, difficult working conditions, and areas of natural disaster.

Loving and intelligent, it makes a great family companion, herder and show competitor as its majestic stance and military-like posture make for a showy appearance.

This dog is fond of children and is a great protector. It is the kind of dog that willingly sacrifices its life to save its master and his family.

4. Golden Retriever: It is one of the world’s most popular breeds because of its good looks, friendly temperament, high degree of tolerance and an eager-to-please attitude.

It is a great hunting dog, an excellent guide, and a world-class search-and-rescue dog. It has a distinctly attractive personality and is said to have a “kind expression”.

5. Doberman Pinscher: Their reputation as attack dogs that go straight for the jugular is true only if they have been trained do this. The Doberman is muscular, powerful, fast and obedient.

It looks like a warrior with sharp, pointed ears and erect carriage. Energetic, watchful, and fearless, it is very loyal to its master. This dog’s 42 teeth allow it the famous scissor bite with upright lower incisors touching the inside of the upper incisors.

6. Shetland Sheepdog: It looks like a miniature Alsatian or German Shepherd but it is only 13 to 16 inches at the shoulder. Related to the Border Collie, this breed shrank in size when it was first transported to the Shetland Islands and cross-bred with small, smart, long-haired breeds. It is intensely faithful, loving and responsive but only to its owner.

7. Labrador Retriever: Family-friendly, intelligent and gentle, the Labrador loves children and will allow its ears and tail to be pulled and to be bullied. Its natural inclination to please and assist humans makes it an ideal guide for the blind. It is invaluable in search-and-rescue teams and narcotics detection squads.

Originally used by Newfoundland fisherman to drag in nets and nab escaping fish, the original dog was crossed with setters, spaniels and other retrievers before finally becoming the beloved Labrador Retriever. It is an efficient retriever of birds and animals shot by its master.

8. Papillon: It looks like an automated, battery-operated toy but this living, breathing creature is happy, alert, friendly, quick and graceful. The word papillon means “butterfly” in French, and the association was due to the dog’s beautiful ears which resemble the lovely wings of a butterfly.

As befits its name and size (8 to 11 inches), this dog is elegant, fine-structured, light and dainty. Like the poodle, it appears to tip-toe on its legs.

9. Rottweiler: Its dark, menacing looks makes it a favourite of horror movies where its arrival herald some malfeasance, usually towards your body parts. The Rottweiler’s solid, hulky mass of muscles makes it a powerful guard and attack dog.

Despite its appearance, it is surprisingly agile and fleet-footed. Its inbuilt desire to protect family, home and hearth makes it a godsend as companion, guardian and all-purpose dog.

10. Australian Cattle Dog: This strong, compact cattle dog relishes rough, harsh environments, and Australia has plenty of these.

A PACK of Siberian Huskies at a park under the hot sun is a sight that you don’t see every day.

And at a special occasion, the Malaysian Siberian Husky Club celebrated the birthdays of four of their members’ dogs at the 1 Utama Central Park in Bandar Utama recently.

Joining the furry kids were 10 other Siberian Huskies and their owners who brought food and drinks to liven up the atmosphere.

The event was initiated by club president Deby Chor to celebrate the birthdays of her dogs Fawkes and Chaos as well as two other members’ Huskies called Sir Naughty and Dame Queenie.

Chor said she saw the opportunity to hold the get-together at the1 Utama Central Park as the place was dog-friendly and had hosted many large dog gatherings before.

“I am glad that so many Siberian Husky owners turned up at such short notice. Since we only meet once every quarter of the year, this is a wonderful oppurtunity,” she said.

The club, she said, was set up in 2006 to educate first-time owners on the Northern breed.

So far, 226 members have signed up, including those from afar like Britain, the Philippines and Thailand.

Chor said the Siberian Husky club was also active in advocating responsible dog ownership.

She said apart from a standard breed guideline on the club’s Internet domain, its members had also contributed their knowledge on the Siberian Husky.

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR DOG'S IQ

How smart is your dog? A lot depends on you. How well a dog learns to do what’s expected of it — one common way of defining “intelligence” — is actually as much a function of time, patience, practice and environment as it is of canine IQ, said Debra Horwitz, a veterinarian and board-certified animal behaviorist from Creve Coeur.

Horwitz firmly believes every dog has the ability to become more intelligent with proper training and positive reinforcement.

Dogs are like humans, Horwitz said. Some will never gain their highest potential of intelligence, just like humans. “You don’t” need “a purebred to have a smart dog,” she said. Plenty of mutts have plenty of smarts.

Of course, some dogs have been bred over centuries for their talents in specific areas. For example, the border collie is the ideal breed for herding livestock. But because of its excitability and need for a job to do, the border collie wouldn’t be considered “intelligent” in a home environment that didn’t offer plenty of running-around time.

Instead of thinking of your dog as “smart” or “dumb,” try to understand what your dog likes to do and why it might not understand the lessons you’re trying to teach. Try teaching tricks during quiet, calm times. If your dog can’t do the task when it’s relaxed and calm, it surely can’t do it when it’s stressed out and distracted.

Altering your training technique might yield amazing benefits. For dogs that like to jump up and down, for example, try teaching them to “dance.” This channels their energy in a more appropriate way.

Keep in mind that some tasks, although not exclusive to one breed, are more prevalent in certain breeds. Any dog can be taught to follow a scent, but it’s easier to teach that skill to a scent hound or a hunting dog, Horwitz said.

Personality and temperament also have a huge effect on how well a dog adapts to training. A shy dog might find strong physical techniques overwhelming and be intimidated. A quick, energetic dog might find too much repetition boring and lose interest. Training techniques that focus on positive reinforcement as well as different ways to teach the same task will usually bring out the best in any dog, Horwitz said. Punitive training methods are less effective and produce frightened, unhappy — and unpredictable — animals.

When you are clear in the response you want, you are more likely to get it from your pet, she said.

7 Tips to Motivate your Dog walk with you?

There are many ways that you can motivate a dog to walk nicely next to you. Here are some strategies that you can try with your dog to be more interesting so she is motivated to walk near you to see what other fun activity is going to happen!

Bring an outside-only toy with you. If your dog is not thrilled with toys, read this post about teaching a dog to like toys more. Keep a toy near your front door that your dog LOVES. Only use it on walks, and only give it to your dog when she is walking nicely. Gently take it away when she pulls.
Talk more. Enthusiasm is a way to keep your dog focused on you as well as provide information to her that she should continue doing what she is doing because she might get a treat or a toy.
Quick, gentle changes in direction. Occasionally turn quickly and go the other direction when your dog pulls. Never jerk or be rough with your dog. The changes in direction combined with enthusiasm when she is in the right position is a way to keep her focused on you.
Change speeds. If your dog wants to run, run with her for short spurts when she appears by your side. The goal is to make it worthwhile for her to walk in the "reward zone" because sometimes it results in toys, treats or quick sprints might occur.
Change your tone and volume of voice. Did you know talking really softly is one way to sometimes get dog's attention? Try something like, "Hey. What's over there? Let's go check it out" and then start running towards something as soon as your dog looks at you. What are you doing? You are motivating your dog to pay attention to you. The more a dog pays attention to the person holding the leash, the less she is scanning the environment for something to pull towards.
Toy exhanges. Teach your dog to drop toys on cue and then practice toy exchanges on walks by asking for "Drop", and then throwing another toy within the length of the leash. You can continue this periodically on walks to give your dog exercise and mental stimulation. Reward eye contact. Read this post about teaching eye contact on walks. The more your dog is motivated to look at you, the less she will pull towards other distractions.

These are just a few of the many ways you can be more interesting than the environment to keep your dog focused on you. With practice, you will discover what works best to keep your dog interested in you.

Don’t crouch to protect your dog from coyote attack

If your small dog is attacked by a coyote, don’t crouch down and shield your pet, a state wildlife official said.

Debra Berry, of Estero, who did that Sunday night, was bitten on her lower leg by the coyote and on the nose by her pet dachshund she was trying to protect, according to a report by Lt. Gregory Stanley, of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The last thing people should do is to get on the coyote’s level or lower to try and protect their pets, said Gary Morse, a spokesman for the state wildlife agency.

“To a coyote, that is an act of submission,” Morse said.

Instead, people should pick up their pets and stand tall, because that is an act of dominance that coyotes understand, Morse said.

And, he said, people should carry golf clubs or walking sticks or canes to ward off coyote attacks.

In Sunday night’s attack, Berry was armed with a golf club, but didn’t use it, Stanley said.

Although Berry’s dachshund was saved, it was seriously injured and is recuperating at an animal hospital in Estero.

Berry was taken by ambulance to North Collier Hospital to be treated for the bites to her leg.

Three small dogs were killed by coyotes in Estero from March 6 through May 18.

Last week, a Shih Tzu mix was saved by its owner when the dog was attacked by a coyote.

Top 10 ways to prevent dog bites

Here, in honor of Dog Bite Prevention Week, are the top 10 ways to avoid getting bitten by your dog, or someone else's, courtesy of the American Veterinary Medical Association:

1. Pick a dog that is good match for your home. Consult your veterinarian for details about the behavior of different breeds.

2. Socialize your pet. Gradually expose your puppy to a variety of people and other animals so it feels at ease in these situations; continue this exposure as your dog gets older.

3. Train your dog. Commands can build a bond of obedience and trust between man and dog. Avoid aggressive games like wrestling or tug-of-war with your dog.

4. Vaccinate your dog against rabies and other diseases.

5. Neuter or spay your dog. These dogs are less likely to bite.

6. Teach your child to ask a dog owner for permission before petting any dog.

7. Let a strange dog sniff you or your child before touching it, and pet it gently, avoiding the face, head and tail.

8. Never bother a dog if it is sleeping, eating or caring for puppies.

9. Do not to run past a dog. 10.

If a dog threatens you, remain calm. Avoid eye contact. Stand still or back away slowly until the dog leaves. If you are knocked down, curl into a ball and protect your face with your arms and fists.

To those, I would add these, based on my observations and Ace's experiences as a therapy dog: Don't assume all dogs are gentle, and don't assume they're all vicious. Don't, when meeting a dog, put your hand out, then jerk it away again and again. Don't assume a friendly little dog wants to be picked up (or a cat for that matter). Don't scream, or, worse yet, scream and run. Take your time when meeting a dog; let him come to you.

No space was available in dog hotels in Sofia during the holidays and users have to book a room for their pet well in advance.

Demand for so-called pet hotels is very high, according to Graf hotel, which also has a dog training school. Graf representatives said they mainly work with longstanding clients who are aware of the need to book a place in advance for their pet, Focus news agency reported on April 28.

The 15 leva a day price includes special care, a separate cage suitable for the dog’s size and proper heating. The cage is made of tiles and regularly disinfected so as to enable a smooth transition between one dog vacating and another arriving. There is also a big yard where dogs exercise during the day, observed by video cameras. The pets also have special cook.

Graf hotel representatives said that they only accommodate dogs but that other pet hotels accept cats. The price does not depend on the pet size or breed.

Hotel representatives also said there are no problems with the dogs because they do not accept aggressive animals, apparently a common practice in all pets’ accommodations. The dogs are always walked alone and every dog has a separate corridor, the hoteliers also said.

Help your dog overcome carsickness

Many pet experts believe that carsickness in dogs might be prompted by fear of the motion or fear of the noise associated with riding in a car -- or anxiety about an unfamiliar destination.

There are ways to calm dogs down and make them more comfortable in the car.

If possible, start young, getting your puppy accustomed to driving places with you.

For older animals, try this approach:

Invite your dog to join you in the car and give him a treat without ever leaving the driveway.

Do this several days in a row.

Then have him come to the car and just turn on the motor without moving, petting and talking softly to him, then offering him a treat.

Finally, go for a short test drive with him. By this time, many dogs will have forgotten their queasiness about the whole car ordeal.

If all else fails, ask your vet about motion sickness medications.

Dog racing injuries increase!

Seventy-six greyhounds broke their legs racing last year at Dairyland Greyhound Park, an 18.7% increase over the year before, state records show.

A broken leg, or hock, is considered to be one of the most serious injuries a greyhound can suffer at a track.

In all, a total of 462 injuries were reported at the track last year, a 19% increase from 2006.

Of those 462 injuries last year, 363 involved dogs that suffered muscle-related injuries, sprains or fractures. Track owners have complained for several years that the state's Gaming Division, which regulates the track and compiles injury statistics, throws together relatively minor injuries like nail or tail injuries along with the more serious injuries.

The 2007 report makes a distinction between the more severe injuries and the minor ones.

Asked to explain why more dogs are breaking their legs, state officials pointed to a number of factors, including the condition of the track, the race quality of the greyhounds and the weather. Greyhounds run year-round at the track, which opened in 1990 and is the state's last remaining dog-racing track.

Jenifer Barker, a state veterinarian on site at Dairyland who treats most of the injured dogs at the track, cited the condition of the track's surface and the overall deterioration of the greyhound industry in general as reasons for the increased injury rate.

The track has not been completely resurfaced since at least 1995, according to Bill Apgar, the track's general manager. However, he said, the track is constantly maintained and groomed for the dogs.

"Nobody likes injuries," he said. "This is an athletic contest, and injuries do happen. We spare no expense in making the track as safe as we can."

Apgar said the track employed four full-time employees to groom the track, plus three part-timers. In addition, a maintenance director, the track's racing director and Apgar himself monitor the track, he said.

Apgar said that not every injury is attributable to the track itself. "A third of these injuries were injuries when the dogs were bumped in turns. Other injuries could be the result of genetics. Maybe the dog got bumped, didn't show any effects right away and the next time he ran, he broke down," he said.

Barker said her veterinary peers around the country did not have a set policy on how often a track needs to be resurfaced, but said a rule of thumb is every three to five years.

Industry experts have differing opinions on what constitutes a well-maintained track that minimizes injury. Some say a hard surface is the best surface; others say a more forgiving surface can minimize injury.

Barker also said the greyhound industry has been in decline for years, a victim of differing tastes and the growth of casino gambling.

"Some have called it a dying industry," she said. "There's not much money in it, and there isn't as high caliber of help as there used to be."

Barker recalled a time in the 1990s when each kennel at a dog track would have several helpers on duty. Today the average is more like two helpers per kennel.

Dan Subach, the Gaming Division's chief steward at Dairyland, said a number of factors played a role in the number of injuries. But all parties are trying to address the frequency of injuries.

"It will take enormous efforts by numerous parties. . . to hopefully have a positive impact on this," he said.

According to Subach, weather plays a role in injuries at Dairyland. The dogs are subjected to rain, wind, snow, sleet and very dry conditions.

"And there is a concern that the quality of dogs Dairyland is getting is not as good as they've seen in the past," Subach said. "And that quality may be related to past health issues, or previous injuries. Finally, when dogs run well, they tend to be moved out to other tracks.

"We want to look at the kennels and the education and training at the kennels, and make sure they are putting a sound animal on the track."

Besides pari-mutuel greyhound racing, the track also offers simulcast horse and greyhound racing from around the country. In 2006, the track reported it had lost $2.84 million; track owners say they expect to report they lost millions in 2007.

The owners of Dairyland are awaiting federal approval of a proposed more than $800 million casino-convention center project that would be built on the grounds of the dog-racing track. The Menominee tribe has an option to buy the track for $40.5 million. The tribe is partners with the Mohegan tribe in Connecticut to build the complex and continue live dog racing. The Mohegans would develop and manage the casino for seven years.

Miniature horse dies from dog attack

LUBBOCK, Texas — A second miniature horse has died after being attacked by pit bulls last month.

Kauli Sparks, co-owner of Hearts and Hooves of Lubbock, said the decision was made Saturday to put Jolly down to ease the therapy horse's suffering.

"He was doing really well until yesterday, probably around 2 p.m.," Sparks said in Sunday's online edition of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. "He basically crashed."

Five Hearts and Hooves miniature horses were attacked by pit bulls last month. Oreo was killed in the attack.

Sparks said Jolly developed toxemia, a general infection that spread throughout his body and caused many of his organs to begin shutting down.

Hearts and Hooves is a nonprofit organization that brings miniature horses indoors to people who need therapeutic healing.

The owner of the dogs signed them over to Lubbock Animal Services.

It is a Dog Life!

I AM a dog. Well, at least according to the Chinese zodiac I am. And according to an article I recently stumbled across on the Internet, people born in the Year of the Dog “possess the best traits of human nature.”

I’m inclined to agree with this gross generalization. But then, I’m inclined to agree with anything that depicts me in a positive, glowing manner. Like all good dog people, I have a deep sense of loyalty. I am also honest and inspire other people’s confidence because I know how to keep secrets. Unlike rat, snake and monkey people, I suspect.

But ... and there’s always a but ... “dog people are somewhat selfish, terribly stubborn, and eccentric.”

If these are some of “the best traits of human nature”, I hate to imagine what traits non-dog people possess.

But there’s more. “They (dog people) care little for wealth, yet somehow always seem to have money. They can be cold emotionally and sometimes distant at parties. They can find fault with many things and are noted for their sharp tongues.”

I don’t know about you, but I feel there’s something wrong with that last paragraph. It’s as if the author is saying that dog people come by their money in a suspicious way. And if I’m cold emotionally, what would I be doing at a party? Cold people don’t go to parties. They like to stay at home and play games like “Revenge of the Killer Dog” on their computers.

Although I normally don’t find fault with anything or anyone (don’t forget I’m honest), I don’t have anything good to say about the writer of that article. As for having a sharp tongue, I only reserve that for really irritating people, like most Malaysian drivers, pushy shop assistants, people who look at me in an odd way, women who wear strong perfume, and people who walk slowly in front of me in crowded shopping malls. Oh yes, and the designers of shopping malls. Other than that, I’m probably the sweetest, most amiable person you’re ever likely to meet.

The zodiac article does redeem itself when it concludes by saying that dog people make good leaders. But then again, perhaps an emotionally cold leader isn’t such a good thing. As far as I know, Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini were all cold leaders. And they didn’t get up to much good.

It also seems that I am compatible with people in the Years of the Horse, Tiger, and Rabbit. Of the few friends I do have (due to my emotional coldness) none were born under these zodiac signs. Indeed, if the zodiac article is correct, I have aligned myself with a bunch of eccentric, bad-tempered loners. Not exactly the sort of people you want to have around you at a party.

I’m not even all that compatible with my children. My son is a snake person and my daughter is a pig person. Interestingly enough, people born in the same year as my son “never have to worry about money; they are financially fortunate.” He’s obviously benefiting from all the money I seem to have. Or maybe it’s because he’s memorised my credit card numbers.

My daughter, on the other hand, in true pig-like fashion, is kind to her loved ones and very loyal. When I’m old, I’d much rather have a kind, loyal pig taking care of me than a snake. Besides, the zodiac article asserts that snake people are usually good-looking and sometimes have marital problems because they are fickle. Maybe good-looking people can afford to be fickle with their partners because they know that it’s relatively easy to attract another mate if their marriage fails. I certainly don’t want to be stuck in the same house as a disgruntled daughter-in-law during my twilight years.

Dogs are also not all that compatible with people born in the Year of the Rat. Typically, rat people are charming and highly attractive to the opposite sex. But they are stingy. They are also quick-tempered and love to gossip. But all is not lost for people contemplating having a baby during this coming Year of the Rat, because rat people are said to “work hard to achieve their goals, acquire possessions, and are likely to be perfectionists. Their ambitions are big, and they are usually very successful.”

In short, children born this coming year will likely grow up to have fabulous careers and every luxury money can buy, but they won’t share it with anyone.

I think I’ll stick with the pigs.

A White House Dog-and-Pony Show

Since 1800, when John and Abigail Adams became the first residents of what we now call the White House, lots of pets also have called it home. The Adamses started things off with two dogs, Juno and Satan, and built stables for horses.

Over two centuries, the mansion at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. has welcomed all sorts of animals, from an alligator to wolfhounds. In size, these creatures have ranged from silkworms to an elephant (he only visited, though, and lived at the zoo).

Some of these pets were faithful companions, some helped shape public opinion about their owners, and some were ambassadors for good causes.

In the early 1900s, Theodore Roosevelt's children nearly turned the White House into an ark. Besides dogs and cats, they had a pony and horses, some sheep, a macaw, guinea pigs, rats, snakes, a badger and a one-legged rooster.

Once, when 13-year-old Archie Roosevelt was very sick, his brother Quentin brought their pony, Algonquin, upstairs in the White House elevator to cheer him.

In 1863, Tad Lincoln interrupted a wartime Cabinet meeting to plead with his father to spare the life of a turkey that was about to become Christmas dinner. Abraham Lincoln did as 10-year-old Tad wished, pardoning the bird.

Exactly one year from today, a new president will be inaugurated and move into the White House. Maybe some new pets will move in, too.

As hundreds of dogs rescued from a puppy mill in Hillsville earlier this month are prepped for adoption, scores of potential owners up and down the East Coast have already lined up to take one home.

But before making the next addition to your family, area animal health and welfare experts urge, do your homework.

"You're talking about a 14- to 16-year commitment, so it should not be a sympathy purchase with those big sad eyes looking at you," said Mark Finkler, owner of Roanoke Animal Hospital. "I think a lot of people get the wrong breed or wrong temperament for their lifestyle."

Potential mistakes are plentiful when choosing a dog.

Some people underestimate the financial commitment. Others make an impulse purchase. Still others don't know the dog's background, which might include abusive owners or less-than-ideal breeding conditions, Finkler said.

At the Roanoke Valley SPCA, some dogs that are adopted are later returned to the shelter because their new owners didn't realize what they were tackling when bringing a dog into their homes.

A Chinese restaurant in southwest Moscow is being investigated on suspicion of rounding up dogs on the street, killing them and passing their cooked meat off to customers as lamb, city police said Monday.

Two residents went to police after seeing suspicious activity near the restaurant, located at 88 Prospekt Vernadskogo, near the Yugo-Zapadnaya metro station, police spokeswoman Irina Volk said.

English Bull Dog!

One of the calmest canine breeds known on earth, the English bull dogs are believed to have developed from an ancient breed of Asiatic mastiff. It was first born in Great Britain and was named bull dog simply for its robust appearance of a little bull. Although considered as the gentlest kind, the English bull dogs were originally developed for bull baiting in the medieval Britain. They were sent to fields to attack bulls during that time, before the said sport was prohibited by law in the dawn of nineteenth century.

The English bull dogs are noted particularly for its unique, intimidating appearance. It stands very short, but has a compact and wide body. Its head is known for being so thick, massive and broad with cheeks that expand to the sides of its eyes. It also has lips that are pendent and undershot, and its eyes are dark, round, and are located far apart.

To complement its face, the English bull dogs have small ears that are thin and folded back. In terms of coat, the English bull dogs have a coat that lies close to its body. The coat of this breed is noted for its texture and appearance, with smooth, flat and straight hairs. Just like the rest of the canine breeds, the coat of the English bull dogs comes in different colors and shades.

Typically, you can see shades of red, brindle, pale yellow, white, fawn, and washed out red, or a combination of these colors in an English bull dog. Black is not common and is not even acceptable. These colors look great with the dogs short and small size with squarely set and stocky legs.

The English bull dogs intimidating looks does not speak much for its character and temperament. In fact, this breed is often described as the calmest and most reliable kind. It is gentle and loving, with a tendency to seek for more affection and attention.

Also, the English bull dogs interact well with other canine breeds and even felines. They also make a good companion for adults, as well as kids. With such qualities, its no wonder that the English bull dogs are often treated as a family dog. But more to that, the breed is also considered as perfect for guarding, the reason that more bull dogs are now trained for guarding and watch dogging.

Huntington Kennel Club Dog Show

Dogs of all shapes, sizes and colors took the spotlight Sunday at the Veterans Memorial Field House for the Huntington Kennel Club Dog Show.

The three-day event, which kicked off Friday with a bulldog club specialty show, was similar to the nationally televised American Kennel Club dog shows, but on smaller scale.

There were 650 dogs that were registered Saturday, while 621 were registered Sunday, said Tim Childers, show chairman and vice president of the Huntington Kennel Club.

Of the many foreign varieties of the dog that have been introduced within recent years, there is not one among the larger breeds that has made greater headway in the public favour than the Borzoi, or Russian Wolfhound.

Nor is this to be wondered at. The most graceful and elegant of all breeds, combining symmetry with strength, the wearer of a lovely silky coat that a toy dog might envy, the length of head, possessed by no other breed all go to make the Borzoi the favourite he has become.

Borzoi Characteristics as follows:–

HEAD — This should be long, lean, and well balanced, and the length, from the tip of the nose to the eyes, must be the same as from the eyes to the occiput. A dog may have a long head, but the length may be all in front of the eyes. The heads of this breed have greatly improved the last few years; fewer “apple-headed” specimens, and more of the desired triangular heads being seen.

The skull should be flat and narrow, the stop not perceptible, the muzzle long and tapering. Too much stress cannot be laid on the importance of the head being well filled up before the eyes. The head, from forehead to nose, should be so fine that the direction of the bones and principal veins can be seen clearly, and in profile should appear rather Roman nosed. Bitches should be even narrower in head than dogs.

EYES - should be dark, expressive, almond shaped, and not too far apart.

EARS -like those of a Greyhound, small, thin, and placed well back on the head, with the tips, when thrown back, almost touching behind the occiput. It is not a fault if the dog can raise his ears erect when excited or looking after game, although some English judges dislike this frequent characteristic. The head should be carried somewhat low, with the neck continuing the line of the back.

SHOULDERS — Clean and sloping well back, i.e., the shoulder blades should almost touch one another.

CHEST — Deep and somewhat narrow. It must be capacious, but the capacity must be got from depth, and not from “barrel” ribs a bad fault in a running hound.

BACK — Rather bony, and free from any cavity in the spinal column, the arch in the back being more marked in the dog than in the bitch.

LOINS — Broad and very powerful, showing plenty of muscular development.

THIGHS — Long and well developed, with good second thigh. The muscle in the Borzoi is longer than in the Greyhound.

RIBS — Slightly sprung, very deep, reaching to the elbow.

FORE-LEGS — Lean and straight. Seen from the front they should be narrow and from the side broad at the shoulder and narrowing gradually down to the foot, the bone appearing flat and not round as in the Foxhound.

HIND-LEGS — The least thing under the body when standing still, not straight, and the stifle slightly bent. They should, of course, be straight as regards each other, and not “cow-hocked,” but straight hind-legs imply a want of speed.

FEET — Like those of the Deerhound, rather long. The toes close together and well arched.

COAT — Long, silky, not woolly; either flat, wavy, or curly. On the head, ears and front-legs it should be short and smooth; on the neck the frill should be profuse and rather curly; on the chest and the rest of the body, the tail and hind-quarters, it should be long; the fore-legs being well feathered.

TAIL — Long, well feathered, and not gaily carried. It should be carried well down, almost touching the ground.

HEIGHT — Dogs from 29 inches upwards at shoulder, bitches from 27 inches upwards. (Originally 27 inches and 26 inches. Altered at a general meeting of the Borzoi Club, held February, 1906.)

FAULTS — Head short and thick; too much stop; parti-coloured nose; eyes too wide apart; heavy ears; heavy shoulders; wide chest; “barrel” ribbed; dew-claws; elbows turned out; wide behind. Also light eyes and over or undershot jaws.

COLOUR — The Club standard makes no mention of colour. White, of course, should predominate; fawn, lemon, orange, brindle, blue, slate and black markings are met with. Too much of the latter, or black and tan markings, are disliked. Whole colour dogs are also seen.

Owning A Dog Is Good For Your Health

A UK study reveals that owning a dog is good for your health. And having a pet dog improves your physical and mental wellbeing more than having a cat.

This is the conclusion of a study by a senior lecturer, Dr Deborah Wells, from the Canine Behaviour Centre of Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Dr Wells has published her study in the British Journal of Health Psychology.

The study is a review of research papers that have explored the connection between domestic dog ownership and human wellbeing.

In her research Dr Wells found papers that suggest domestic dog ownership can prevent people from getting ill, recover more quickly when they do fall ill, and give warning of early signs of cancer, seizures and hypoglycaemia. She also explored the research into dogs and human psychological health, including the therapeutic role that dogs play in aiding the disabled and also in hospitals, prisons and residential homes.

An Israeli research paper said it was likely that animal companions helped people with schizophrenia feel motivated and calmer. And another UK study suggested that the companionship of a dog helped children with chronic illnesses endure painful treatments. Some of the evidence was found to be weak, but in other areas Dr Wells found strong evidence to suggest that dog owners have lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and are less likely to have minor and serious health problems.

In one paper dated 1985, Dr Wells found that dog owners had an 8.6 higher one year survival rate after a heart attack compared to people who did not have a dog. Dr Wells suggests there could be a number of reasons for the health benefits of dog ownership.

There is the more obvious direct effect of increased physical activity, but then there are also indirect effects such as that brought by increased social contact and the possibility that the human-dog bond provides a psychological buffer against stress.

Comparing cat and dog ownership, Dr Wells found evidence that people who take cats and dogs from rescue centres reported reductions in minor health problems such as headaches, dizzy spells and colds as soon as one month after taking their new companion home.

However, it was only those people who had taken dogs, as opposed to cats, that still had the improved health conditions up to ten months later.

Peru’s unique hairless dogs

His eyes gleaming with joy underneath a yellow mohawk and his tail with a little brush at the tip wagging playfully, Josh the Peruvian Hairless Dog heads out to greet tourists at Lima’s Pucllana ruins.

About the size of an English pointer, Josh and his kin are not guard dogs, but, rather, are guarded behind the walls of this and other historic monuments on the Peruvian coast — the hairless sight hound’s habitat for more than 3,000 years.

They are part of the historic scenery here, but the canine breed almost became history several years back. “Now we can say they are safe, saved by this project, but a few years ago the Peruvian Hairless Dog was under threat of extinction in Peru,” said Pedro Vargas, coordinator of the Huaca Pucllana archaeological project excavating an ancient temple site of the Lima civilisation dating back to 500.

The breed normally has hair resembling a mohawk on the head and a tail brush, but otherwise has naked dark, very warm skin. Its history is long and rather sad, especially after the Spanish conquest starting in 1532.

Native pre-Incan civilisations used the dogs for hunting and as pets for company. They are represented on the ceramic pottery of the Chimu, Moche and Chancay cultures found on the coast.

They were sometimes mummified and buried along with people to help the departed find their way to the world of the dead or to continue serving their owners in the afterlife. The Spanish brought giant war dogs to fight the natives and would often amuse themselves by setting off one such dog against a small pack of the smaller local breed.

“There are reports it could tear four, five hairless dogs in pieces easily,” Vargas said, caressing Josh’s head.

The breed got to the 21st century on the brink of extinction, and that’s when the government decided to safeguard it by ordering all archaeological sites along the coast to have at least a pair — after Huaca Pucllana’s 1989 initiative. They are now also Peru’s only own world-registered breed.

“We know there are quite a few now, and there are people breeding them and people buying them here and for export - it is a luxury dog now,” Vargas said, adding though there was still a lot of prejudice against the dog’s naked skin.

Labrador the Top Dog in US

The Labrador Retriever was crowned the most popular U.S. purebred dog on Monday for the 16th straight year, but the Yorkshire Terrier — a celebrity favorite — stole the spotlight by jumping to the second spot.

The American Kennel Club said the tiny terriers fondly known as "Yorkies" beat out the traditional U.S. favorites, the German Shepherd and Golden Retriever, according to 2006 registration data.

"To have such a small dog overtake America's iconic dogs is really amazing," said the club's spokeswoman, Daisy Okas. The last time a small dog, weighing less than 20 pounds (9 kg), won such status was when the Boston Terrier was the second-most popular breed in 1939.

"Celebrities have had a lot of influence," Okas said. "We do not advocate dogs as fashion accessories. Before you get a dog, no matter what breed, you have to make a lifetime commitment."

Celebrities with Yorkshire Terriers reportedly include actresses Tara Reid, Naomi Watts and Kirsten Dunst, singers Anastacia, Kelly Clarkson and Mariah Carey, model Gisele Bundchen and tennis star Venus Williams.

New Yorker Tasasha Chavis, a nanny who lives on Manhattan, estimated she has spent thousands of dollars on her two Yorkies, named Mz Peanut Brittle and Little Bit of Honey, who have their own bedroom and wardrobe.

Mz Peanut Brittle, who was wearing a tiny tiara and pearl collar, travels in style.

"I have a Coach carrier for her but she is not an accessory. She has shoes and jackets and a stroller. She sleeps in my bed," Chavis said. "I don't have any kids — these are my babies."

According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, U.S. pet owners spent more than $38 billion on their animals in 2006.

"People are just treating dogs like family more and more," Okas said. "They want to have that companionship."

She said the Labrador Retriever was the consistent favorite because it is "one of the most versatile breeds." "They want to be with people, they are very trainable, they want to be their owner's best friend,"

At No. 3 in the American Kennel Club's top 10 was the German Shepherd, followed by the Golden Retriever, Beagle, Dachshund, Boxer, Poodle, Shih Tzu and Miniature Schnauzer.

But in New York City, the poodle was top dog.

If you’re a dog in New York, the chances are you’re a mongrel named Max.

According to the latest figures released by the city’s health department on Wednesday, there were more than 1,200 dogs named Max, making the name the most popular among the city's more than 100,000 registered canines.

Max was followed by Lucky, Princess, Rocky and Buddy. Mutts, meanwhile, outnumbered their pedigree counterparts, with Labradors, Pit Bulls, Shih Tzus and German Shepherds the most popular purebreds.

Under New York law, all dogs must be licensed and have a licensed tag on their collar while in public.

Scientist Cloned Female Dog

Lee Byeong-chun, a veterinary professor of Seoul National University, center, and his researchers show three female cloned dogs Bona, left, Hope, center, and Peace at the university's Veterinary School in Seoul, Monday, Dec. 18, 2006.

Lee, a former key collaborator of disgraced South Korean cloning scientist Hwang Woo-suk, claimed Monday that he succeeded in cloning a female dog, following last year's breakthrough of creating the world's first cloned dog, which was male.

This was a process that must be done to see if a cloned dog has reproduction capabilities," Lee told The Associated Press.

Lee was a key member of Hwang's research team, whose purported breakthroughs in creating human stem cells through cloning were found to be fake. But the team's success in cloning the world's first dog, Snuppy, was confirmed.

Lee, who had been suspended from his university for three months over the stem cell scandal, was the main scientist in the dog cloning. He has been on trial, along with Hwang and other former team members, on charges of misappropriating research funds. If he gets a prison term, he could lose his job as professor of the top South Korean university.

Puppies Vaccination

It’s important to understand that no vaccine is 100% effective all the time. Factors that can affect immune response in a puppy include his health and the level of maternal antibodies still circulating in his system. If a puppy is exposed to a virus shortly before or approximately the same time a vaccination is given, the vaccine is likely to fail.

This occurs for any number of reasons. Some puppies simply don’t have adequate immune function. Stress, poor nutrition and other factors can interfere with immunity for short periods of time as well.

Puppies are born with some degree of natural immunity to disease which some degree of natural immunity to disease which they received form the rich colostral milk their mother produces the two or three days of a pup’s life.

The Colostrum contains antibodies to disease, which provides the pups with limited protection during the first weeks of life called passive immunity or sometimes maternal immunity.

This protection gradually decrease and may diminish by as much as 78% by the time a pup is 2 weeks old. Most puppies complete loss passive immunity by the time they’re 14 to 15 weeks old.

Dog has been used in war through recorded history. The Roman bred large mastiffs and affixed them with spiked collars before going to battle. During the first World War, the French, Germans and English all used dog sis battle. By the Second World War, the Americans also had inducted canine combatants.

Although the American did not officially use dog in wartime until World War II, they were unofficially present in every battle in American History. During the American Revolution, soldiers routinely brought their hunting dogs with them into battle as companion and as watch dogs.

During the civil War, soldiers on both sides were known to have dogs in their company. Some American soldiers adopted dog while serving during World War I, stray dogs were common in the bombed out European cities and on the battlefields.

Some of these dog ended up serving as messengers, other become mascots for military unit and most served unofficially duties as guards and therapy Dog.

Search and Rescue Dog may be media sweethearts but they’re also highly trained, highly efficient workers. Search and rescue dogs search fro living or dead human beings who are missing. They may search in wilderness or in suburban areas, in snow or in water.

Search and rescue dog must have a strong play and toy drive. Although they have been used for centuries in Europe, they only been embraced during the last 20 to 30 years in the US. Most search and rescue dog are handled by private citizens. Although there is an increasing number of search and rescue dogs owned and trained by ski patrol units, firefighters and rural police department.

The training for search and rescue dog is done in increments. The dog is taught first to alert by barking, sitting or scratching for a toy or other object. He then progresses to alerting on a toy in a handler hand. It is gradually made more complex when the handler hides the object in increasingly difficult location.

Trainers sometimes use what is called a bark box. The handler hides inside a wooden box and the door opens when the dog exhibits an alert. The dog then learns to exhibit the same alert on any human smell. Some dogs are also taught to search for human remains through the use of cadaver scent.

Sometimes just to relate anecdotes and show off their pup’s photo. Enter almost any dog related subject into an internet search engine. Expert however caution that much of the information on the internet is untried or not tested.

For veterinarian or behavior questions, it is safe to visit a qualified veterinarian or qualified trainer. At the same time, researching a breed or new activity is a snap with the internet and undoubtedly has led to a greater knowledge of our canine companions.

World Ugliest Dog

World Ugliest dog “Sam” died in November 2005 due to heart failure, lung and kidney problem. Sam win few animal contest in Sonoma Marin Fair in California in 2003,2004 and 2005.

Sam made few appearances on TV show in Japan, radio show in New Zealand and in Britain's Daily Mirror tabloid and even lived in luxury hotels and met Trump on a talk show.

Sam is a tiny dog with no hair if you don't count the yellowish-white tuft erupting from his head. His wrinkled brown skin is covered with splotches, a line of warts marches down his snout, his blind eyes are an alien, milky white and a fleshy flap of skin hangs from his withered neck.

Give some comments if you have anything to said to Sam. Hope all dog lover out there know the existing of this unique dog species.

Some Dog lovers work with dog that have special skills. Other helps dogs develop such skills. These are Handlers and trainers.

There are many different kinds of dog trainers, Most are obedience trainers but there are also those who train services and working dog ,those with advanced degrees and specialized skills such as applied animal behaviorists.

Some trainer work mainly with individual animal, other teach large classes. Trainers work in many setting such as shelters, private business, home and even the sets of movies and television shows.

Handlers on the other hand work with dog after they have been trained and sometimes continue train the dog ongoing basics. These job range from exhibiting dogs at how to working as part of dog human team in police K9 Unit.

Dog Museum is located in an antique mall near Waco, Texas. It claims to house the world's largest public collection of dog items with over 7,000 on display. Museum includes more than 1000 categories. Some of the items in the museum are an18th century rifle with a dog head stock, acast iron dog head hitching post an aluminum Scottie-Shaped heater.

Human and Dogs cross paths more than 10,000 years ago. After that, dog have been lived within villages, worked with us guarded us, share our leisure time and our family lives. Dog share our lives more completely than does any other animal.

The role of dogs in human society has changed dramatically since we first encounter one another, but throughout recorded existence dogs have been significant our myths and folklore, religions and cultural memories. In modern time, dogs are celebrated in movies and art, firm comics strips to great literature. Yet their presence in our lives is not always simple. Sometimes disparate needs have necessitated that we protect dog from human and humans from dogs through animal rescues efforts and through laws.
